The hypocrisy of sporting commentary

Letter to the editor Sydney Morning Herald

Sometimes; being an avid reader of both the Opinion section of the SMH, as well as; the Sports section, brings its own rewards.

Today was such a day; with brilliant articles by Waleed Ali and Andrew Webster, at both ends of the paper.

Both articles encapsulate the hypocrisy of thought and comment brought on by the death of Muhammad Ali and contrast this with our treatment of outspoken black sportsmen and women in this country.

Adam Goodes has unwillingly become the focus of bigoted white rage over his refusal to accept racism in the AFL.

One can only hope, recognition of Adam’s role in forcing us to reflect on, and consider our attitudes, does not have to wait until his eulogies are being written.

Congrats to the writers today for the clarity and honesty in both articles.
